AI search optimization — the 2026 playbook.

AI search optimization is the discipline of getting a brand cited by ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews in the moment a buyer asks a question in your category. It splits into two surfaces — AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) targets the AI overview boxes in Google and Perplexity, GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) targets the conversational LLM answers in ChatGPT and Claude. Both share infrastructure. This is the 2026 playbook.


01 · Definition

What AI search optimization is.

AI search optimization is the work of making your brand findable inside AI-generated answers, not just inside ten blue links. The same buyer query — "best Klaviyo consultants in Miami" — used to return a list. In 2026 it returns a synthesized paragraph with three to seven citations. If your brand is not in those citations, you are invisible in the moment the buyer is forming an opinion.


02 · Structural moves

The five structural moves.

  1. llms.txt at the root. Five minutes. Immediate effect on Claude and Anthropic-adjacent crawlers. Format: llmstxt.org.
  2. Schema markup across cornerstone pages. Organization + WebSite, FAQPage, Service, Article, BreadcrumbList, Speakable, DefinedTermSet. Tells engines what each page is.
  3. Answer-shaped content. Every cornerstone H2 is a buyer question, every opening paragraph is a 40-to-80 word direct answer.
  4. Off-site mentions. 5 to 10 mentions in sites the engines already trust — trade press, Wikipedia, Crunchbase, podcast transcripts, niche directories.
  5. Track citation rate weekly. Without measurement you cannot iterate.

03 · Timeline

What to expect in the first 90 days.

Weeks 1-2: structural fixes ship — llms.txt, schema, content reshape. First mention tracking baseline.

Weeks 3-6: first citations land. Perplexity recrawls fastest. Claude lags one to three weeks. ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews lag longest because they piggyback on slower indexes.

Weeks 7-12: citation count compounds. By day 90 most clients we work with land at least 10 citations across the four major engines for category queries.


04 · Metrics

The three metrics that matter.

Citation rate. Percentage of category queries where your brand is cited by name. The headline metric.

AI Overview position. When Google AI Overview fires on a query, are you in the citation bar? Track per query.

Mention sentiment. When the engine cites you, what does it say about you? Bad description is worse than no citation.


05 · Tools
